Every single day of most of the families ends on a new note of starting a fitness regimen the next day. The walls get stuck with reminders and alarms get their new edition. Getting fit and a healthy glowing skin start with an extensive routine care. But, an often overlooked factor which causes serious health issue, and starts affecting us slowly is the smog engulfing the atmosphere. We’re talking about smog (smoke+fog), which has engulfed the Delhi atmosphere (all thanks to the crackers that were burnt on the Diwali night).

Magazines give tips, grand moms give their beauty secrets but we will name you some food items which are easily available, and will help you to counteract the effects of smog by using every day.

1. Honey

Known for its healing property, Honey prevents cancer and heart diseases. One of the oldest sweeteners, it is filled with anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. It is also healthy for skin in many ways. Some of the ways how you can strengthen yourself against smog are:

a. Having crushed pepper with honey can clear your accumulated cough from the chest.

b. When consumed with jaggery, honey strengthens immunity and provides protection from air pollution and other diseases.

c. To cure breathing problems, cough, cold and infections and also to soothe irritation, it is beneficial to drink ginger juice thrice a day by mixing honey.

2. Orange

Oranges are full of dietary fibre and are rich in citrus lemonades, which help to fight varieties of cancer. According to two studies in Japan, eating mandarin oranges reduce liver cancer. They are full of potassium, which keeps the heart function well.  Oranges are full of Vitamin C, which is a very effective anti-oxidant and increases energy in the body.

4. Spinach

An excellent source of vitamin K, Spinach is low in fat and even lower in cholesterol. It provides protein, iron and improves blood glucose control in diabetics. One of its most important nutrients is beta-carotene, which lowers the risk of asthma caused mostly due to pollution.

5. Walnuts

A perfect package of protein, healthy fats, fibre and many vitamins and minerals, Walnut provides more than 100 per cent of the daily recommended value of plant-based omega-3 fats. It helps not only to reduce the risk of prostate cancer but also breast cancer. It contains amino acid I-arginine, beneficial to people with heart disease and pneumonia. It also helps in controlling weight and improves reproductive health in men.

6. Tulsi


An inexpensive source of treating  numerous ailments, Tulsi is trusted in India for different ayurvedic solutions in curing respiratory diseases. The holy basil has antiseptic properties and is used for treating ulcers, cuts and wounds. It proves to be one cure for many effects caused by smog.

3. Almonds

Vitamin E protects from toxins such as pollution and skin cancer. High level of Vitamin E reduces the risk of sun stroke and helps in alleviating fatigue. It also speeds up cell regeneration and creates an anti-aging effect.
