In May 2016, KFC India launched addHOPE, an initiative to fight hunger in the country.
The program, in partnership with, Smile Foundation, ResponseNet (Delhi and Gurgaon Food Banking Network) and India Food Banking Network (IFBN) aims to provide 20 million meals to underprivileged children by 2020.
As a food company, KFC recognizes its corporate social responsibility towards the underprivileged. Rahul Shinde, MD, KFC India explained that “1 in 4 children in India is malnourished and consequently, faces greater obstacles to reaching their fullest potential. Through addHOPE™ we want the children of our country to be given access to nutritious and balanced meals in order to grow and learn, so they can be their best selves.”
KFC encourages customers to contribute to feeding a child by simply adding Rupees 5 to their bill. In addition to this, KFC employees aid local communities through volunteerism. Currently, the popular chicken restaurant chain, along with its partners, has feeding sites across 51 locations in 16 major Indian cities.
In its first year, the initiative has provided over 33 Lakh meals to more than 11,000 children everyday over 16 cities. As part of its one-year anniversary, addHOPE, in partnership with Smile Foundation traveled to Kolkata, to feed underprivileged children at their feeding site. Children of Towards Future School where KFC India supports a meal program for 75 students. Bollywood actor Tanishaa Mukerji also joined the celebrations, as hunger is a social issue she cares deeply about. She was quoted as saying, “Hunger is a major challenge that the country is facing today. addHOPE is tackling a complex problem, by raising awareness and funds for the cause and making a positive difference to a child’s life. While many think of us as “stars”, for me, the real stars are KFC customers and employees who have helped raise funds to feed 11,000 children every day!”
In an age plagued with social issues, initiatives such as addHOPE serve to highlight the role that the corporates can play in tackling a number of problems, including, but not limited to world hunger. A part of KFC’s CSR, addHOPE presents exciting opportunities for major improvement in hunger statistics across the globe. Lending his support to the cause, Mr. Santanu Mishra, Co-founder and Executive Trustee, Smile Foundation said, “Our collaboration with KFC’s addHOPE™ campaign is our effort to join the movement towards ending world hunger. We are today feeding 1700 children every day across the country as part of our partnership with KFC’s addHOPE™. We are confident that this partnership will grow stronger each year, and collectively we will be able to reach out to even more children.”
